What is Dual Credit at VIU?
Dual Credit gives high school students a unique opportunity to test out what it is like to take university-level programs, certifications, and courses at VIU while gaining credit towards their high school diploma and future academic and career paths.
Dual Credit programming is offered at VIU’s Nanaimo, Cowichan, and tiwšɛmawtxʷ campuses, with some offerings online.
With academic and trades-related streams, students may define their interests for pursuing higher education and possible career paths:
- Trades-Related Dual Credit opportunities provide valuable hands-on training for skilled professions
- Certification Programs offer the education necessary for specific high-demand fields and entry-level positions by combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience
- Academic Courses develop theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills in specific fields of study

VIU has partnerships with 11 school districts across Vancouver Island to offer access to Dual Credit programs, courses, and certifications.
Dual Credit offerings are an opportunity for high school students to:
- Be exposed to vastness of educational and career paths
- Build various skills to apply throughout their entire professional journey
- Provide students an early welcome to the friendly, diverse, unique, and vibrant community and student services at VIU
- Support students during the transitional processes of learning within a university environment
- Explore alternative ways of achieving their high school diploma
- Reduce the course load of students entering university post- high school graduation
- Provide high school students with tuition funding through their school district to participate in university courses and programs

For high school students who are eager to take advantage of Dual Credit at VIU across the three VIU campuses, the first point of contact is your School District Career Centre Coordinator.
This individual will be able to help examine what opportunities and funding is available, ensure you have the required pre-requisites, and work with you to enroll as a VIU Dual Credit student.
