HVAC 101T Shop and Personal Safety
An examination of the identification and implementation of safe work practices as defined by Workers Compensation Board regulations, and Environment Canada Code of Practice for HVAC/R (includes WHMIS certification).

HVAC 102T Shop Tools and Equipment
An opportunity to identify and use shop tools and equipment applicable to the HVAC/R trade. Topics include use, adjustment and maintenance of shop equipment in a competent manner.

HVAC 103T Fundamentals of Electricity and Magnetism
An examination of electrical theory as it applies to the HVAC/R trade. Topics include electron theory, Ohms law, series and parallel, circuits, and the role of magnetism in electrical and electronic circuits.

HVAC 104T The Canadian Electrical Code C22.1-98
An opportunity to identify and implement safe practices as prescribed by the Canadian electrical code as they relate to the HVAC/R field.

HVAC 105T Automatic Controls
An opportunity to identify and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and electronic controls used in the HVAC/R trade. Includes Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).

HVAC 106T Electric Motors
A focus on the identification, diagnosis and servicing of electric motors used in the HVAC/R trade, including universal, induction, single phase and three phase motors.

HVAC 107T Principles of Heat
An overview of the principles of heat as they relate to the HVAC/R trade. Topics include the use of psychometric charts to plot heating and cooling parameters as well as the effects of humidity on air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

HVAC 108T Commercial Refrigeration
Topics include the identification of commercial refrigeration components, troublsehooting systems using shop props, and CAI (Computer Aided Instruction).

HVAC 109T Dynamics of Air Conditioning, Heating and Humidification
An opportunity to identify, diagnose, and service electric, gas and oil heating systems used in residential and commercial applications. Includes conventional heating systems as well as hydronic heating, and hands-on practical experience on shop props and computer-based instruction.

HVAC 110T Liquified Petroleum Gas and Natural Gas Heat
An opportunity to identify, diagnose, and service compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas heating systems. Includes hands-on practical experience on shop props as well as computer-aided instruction using gas heating simulators.

HVAC 111T Alternate Heating Systems
A study of alternate heating systems used in residential and commercial installations. An opportunity to identify and relate solar and wood heating systems.

HVAC 112T Air Filtration and Humidification
A study and practice of air filtration and humidity control systems used in the HVAC/R trade. Includes different filtration medium and the effects of humidity control in the living and working space.

HVAC 113T Dynamics of Air Conditioning (Cooling)
A study and practice of air conditioning systems used in residential and commercial HVAC/R installations, including package and split air conditioning systems. Includes hands-on practical servicing as well as computer simulations of air conditioning units.

HVAC 114T All Weather Heating Systems
A study and practice in the operation, service, and repair of all-weather heating systems (heat pumps). Includes air to air and water to air systems, as well as hands-on practical servicing and computer simulations on heat pumps.

HVAC 115T Chilled Water Air Conditioning Systems
A study and practice in the operation, service, and repair of chilled water air conditioning systems.

HVAC 130T Essential Workplace Skills
This course introduces the concepts of personal safety and accident prevention in a shop and job setting, as well as an overview of the HVAC trade and specific industry-related activities and competencies for success in the workplace. HVAC 130T was formerly called HVAC 101T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 131T Tools and Equipment
This course covers basic hand and power tool skills, use and maintenance. As well topics such as rigging & hoisting are covered. Material handling (cutting, brazing and soldering equipment) and refrigerant handling and recovery are examined. HVAC 131T was formerly called HVAC 102T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 132T Refrigeration Fundamentals Level 1
This course covers an introduction to the theory and practice of Thermodynamics and Mechanical Refrigeration (refrigeration cycles, systems, and components), as well as hands-on system trouble shooting. HVAC 132T was formerly called HVAC 103T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 133T Electrical Fundamentals Level 1 & 2
Fundamentals of electricity and magnetism including current, resistance, relays, transformers, wiring diagrams, load and motors (single and three-phase), as well as basic controls are covered in this course. Students learn to trouble-shoot electrical circuits. HVAC 133T was formerly called RFRG 202; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 134T Heating Fundamentals Level 1
This course examines heat sources, heat distribution systems, ventilation code requirements, hydronic systems, natural gas and oil-fired appliances, combustion theory, drafting and blueprint reading. Students will learn to trouble-shoot oil and gas-fired systems. HVAC 134T was formerly called HVAC 105T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 135T Commercial Refrigeration Level 1 & 2
Commercial applications such as refrigeration systems, food storage requirements, modulating and cryogenic systems are some of the topics covered in this course. As well, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of refrigeration systems and related standards and codes are taught. HVAC 135T was formerly called RFRG 202; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 136T Comfort Cooling Level 1 & 2
This course covers topics including the theory and practice of installation and maintenance of residential, commercial, and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration and HVAC systems, as well as air distribution systems and their associated requirements and codes. HVAC 136T was formerly called RFRG 202; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 137T Work Experience
This course provides students with the opportunity to job shadow for one week with a trained HVAC technician. This unpaid internship provides students with a real-world experience in the trade. Student set up their own workplace placements in liaison with their instructor. HVAC 137T was formerly called HVAC 116T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 138T Heat Pumps Level 2
This course examines Level 2 Refrigeration topics such as installation, maintenance, repair and operation of heat pump systems; geothermal heat pump systems, theory and operation; and piping and ducting design. HVAC 138T was formerly called RFRG 202; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 139T Emerging Technologies Capstone
This capstone project course is a cumulative summary of topics covered in the program demonstrating proficiency with skills such as interpersonal and teamwork, document text reading & numeracy, communication & listening, problem solving & troubleshooting, job planning & organization, and research and presentation skills. HVAC 139T was formerly called HVAC 110T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 140T Systems Analysis
An introduction to heating and cooling systems. Topics include heat gain and loss calculations, design condition tables, insulating materials, temperature gradient, dew point and the use of air barriers. Analysis of heat pumps, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, air flow in ducting, and operation of cooling towers are also covered. HVAC 140T was formerly called HVAC 112T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HVAC 141T Advanced Controls Level 2
In this course advanced topics such as building automation, direct digital controls, and advanced electrical diagrams are covered in detail. Concepts include pneumatic, electric, electronic, hydronic and forced air controls. HVAC 141T was formerly called RFRG 202; credit will not be granted for both courses.

RACM 150T Use Safe Work Practices
This course covers control of workplace hazards, use of information found in WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, use of WHMIS, use of personal protective equipment, and practice of fire prevention procedures. RACM 150T was formerly called HVAC 130T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

RACM 152T Use Tools and Equipment
This course covers use of hand and power tools; use of measuring and leveling tools; use of cutting, brazing, and soldering equipment; use of access equipment; use of rigging, hoisting, and lifting equipment; use of charging, evacuation, and recovery tools; and use of computers. RACM 152T was formerly called HVAC 131T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

RACM 156T Apply Fundamentals of Refrigeration
This course covers use of refrigerants; use of lubricants; descriptions of compressors, evaporators and condensers; use of metering devices and description of accessories. RACM 156T was formerly called HVAC 132T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

RACM 158T Apply Electrical Concepts

RACM 160T Plan and Install Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems
This course covers analyzing refrigeration systems and installing piping and tubing.

RACM 200T Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship Level 2
This course is the technical training for the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Level 2 Apprenticeship Program. Topics include: Use tools and equipment, perform routine trade activities, apply electrical concepts, apply refrigeration, and air conditioning theory, plan refrigeration and air conditioning installations, install refrigeration and air conditioning installations, apply gas utilization theory, install gas-fired systems, and service refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Prerequisite: Registered as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprentice with the Industry Training Authority and have successfully completed Level 1 technical training.
RACM 300T Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship Level 3
This course is the third level of technical training for the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship program. Topics include: use tools and equipment, perform routine trade activities, apply electrical concepts, apply refrigeration and air conditioning theory, plan refrigeration and air conditioning installations, install refrigeration and air conditioning installations, apply gas utilization theory, install gas-fired systems, commission systems, service refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and service gas-fired appliances and equipment.
Prerequisite: Registered as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Apprentice with the Industry Training Authority. Successful completion of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Level 2 technical training.
RACM 400T Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Apprenticeship
This course is the fourth level of technical training for the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Apprenticeship program. Topics include organizing work, applying electrical concepts, planning and installing refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and maintaining and servicing refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Prerequisite: Registered as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Apprentice with the Industry Training Authority. Successful completion of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Level 3 Technical Training.
RFRG 202 Refrigeration Apprentice - Level 2
This course covers all practical and theory components of Level 2 Technical Training.
Prerequisite: Must be a registered apprentice or meet provincial requirements for apprenticeship (have an Apprenticeship ID number).
