RMGT 100 (3) Introduction to Recreation
This course examines historic and modern systems of delivering recreation services in Canada and globally. Topics include the roots of public service delivery, the sectors of the recreation service industry, the effects of industrialization and urbanization on recreation service delivery in a comparative context, and the state of the recreation profession. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 101, TOUR 100 or RMGT 100. (3:0:0)

RMGT 101 (3) Marketing Recreation Experiences
This course focuses on all aspects of recreation marketing, including situation analysis, marketing philosophy, marketing objectives, market segmentation, target marketing, marketing methods, pricing and promoting recreation services, and monitoring and evaluating marketing activities. An emphasis is placed on the various methods that recreation organizations use to promote leisure experiences. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 106, TOUR 101 or RMGT 101. (3:0:0)

RMGT 109 (9) Co-operative Education Work Placement I
Individual students are carefully matched to employers who supervise them and evaluate their performance during paid work experience. Monitoring is conducted by VIU personnel. Students maintain a diary of their experiences on the job and write a report on their accomplishments. (0:0:0)

RMGT 110 (1) Co-operative Education Preparation
This seminar based course will prepare students for their first Co-operative Education Work placement by examining job search strategies, resume creation, and effective interview techniques. Students will also learn how to conduct informational interviews, career and employment research and skill self-assessment, and roles and responsibilities in a work placement. RMGT 110 was formerly called RECR 101T; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 110 or RMGT 110. (0:1:0)

RMGT 126 (3) Risk Management and Legal Liability in Recreation
This course introduces students to the necessary theoretical, practical and recreation industry-specific knowledge needed to be able to identify a range of risk and legal liability issues within a Canadian context. Legal issues are explored within the context of improving management outcomes, decision-making processes, and recreation service quality. RMGT 126 was formerly called RMGT 226; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 105,TOUR 126 or RMGT 126. (3:0:0)

RMGT 150 (3) Information & Communication Technologies in Recreation
Developments in information and communication technologies (ICT) continue to transform recreation services. Learners will be introduced to systems, programs, and platforms that are used in the management of recreation services. They will develop ICT skills needed for budgeting, research, report writing, digital content creation, program promotion, and project management. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 150 or RMGT 150. (1.5:0:1.5 for 13 weeks)

RMGT 153 (3) Diversity and Inclusion in Recreation
This course explores inclusion and diversity in recreation through significant identity features such as age, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, ability, and ethnicity. Learners examine associated barriers and gain the skills required to design and deliver culturally appropriate recreation products and services. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 103,TOUR 153 or RMGT 153. (3:0:0)

RMGT 161 (3) Organizing and Leading Recreation Activities
This course focuses on developing the ability to organize and lead recreation activities for diverse audiences. Topics include selection/development of age and ability appropriate activities, applied leadership theory, client group dynamics, effective communication, and professional conduct. This course includes an applied lab component, where students will lead/participate in activities. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 161 or RMGT 161. (3:0:0)

RMGT 190 (3) Program Planning I
This course introduces the knowledge and skills needed to design and deliver a diversity of recreation programs. It introduces learners to the knowledge and skills needed to design and deliver recreation programs including needs assessment, design, promotions, implementation, organizational group dynamics, risk management, budgets, and professional conduct. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 102, TOUR 190 or RMGT 190. (3:0:0)

RMGT 205 (3) Recreation Administration
This course covers administrative practices relevant to entry-level professionals in the recreation industry. Topics include foundations of management, decision-making, planning, coordination of financial and human resources in the public, not-for-profit, and private recreation sectors. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 205 or RMGT 205. (3:0:0)

RMGT 209 (9) Co-operative Education Work Placement II
The second and final practical, on-the-job training placement as described in RMGT 109. (0:0:0)

RMGT 210 (1) Co-operative Education Preparation
This seminar based course is designed to prepare students for their second cooperative education work placement, improve job preparation, and retention skills, explore labour markets and career development. Students will develop a personal action plan, portfolio, business card and complete a reflective paper on competencies. RMGT 210 was formerly called RECR 201T; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 210 or RMGT 210. (0:1:0)

RMGT 220 (3) Recreation Places and Spaces
An examination of the key components of leisure service management including the planning, design and construction of public and private facilities and parks. Includes an examination of the impact of innovation on design and operation of facilities and the role of technological development. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 220 or RMGT 220. RMGT 230 (3) Leisure Across the Lifespan
This course introduces students to the fundamental lifespan development perspectives and theories by examining the impact of leisure and recreation on growth and development over the lifespan. Students will explore the relationship between leisure experiences and family, childhood peer relations, career involvement, retirement, and healthy aging. (3:0:0)

RMGT 251 (3) Assessment and Evaluation Methods in Recreation
The focus of this course is on introducing students to common methods of assessing recreation needs and evaluating recreation programs. Topics covered in this course include methods of assessment and evaluation, research ethics, data collection and analysis, knowledge mobilization, and utilizing results. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 251 or RMGT 251. (3:0:0)

RMGT 259 (3) Sustainability in Recreation
This course applies the three pillars of sustainability lens to assess recreation in terms of behaviour and service delivery. Students identify issues and strategies required to connect people with their natural and cultural heritage, promote healthy lifestyles, recognize the interconnections necessary for sustainability, and appreciate intrinsic values of nature and culture. RMGT 259 was formerly called RMGT 159,TOUR 159; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 259 or RMGT 259. (3:0:0)

RMGT 260 (3) Commercial Recreation and Sport
A study of the nature and function of recreation and sport in commercial and private settings, including an overview of the development and profitable operation of areas, facilities, and programs in the leisure market. An opportunity to learn the necessary writing, technical, business management, and people skills to compete in the current marketplace. (3:0:0)

RMGT 270 (3) Recreation and Sport in Aboriginal Communities
An examination of beliefs, participation and organization surrounding aboriginal recreation and sport. Topics include aboriginal community life, patterns of recreation and sport participation, beliefs concerning recreation and sport leadership, traditional games, aboriginal sport and recreation organizations, major aboriginal sport events, parks, and current issues in aboriginal sport and recreation delivery. RMGT 280 (3) Leisure and Active Lifestyles
An examination of the role of leisure and active living in today's society. Topics include the connection between the mind, body and spirit in leisure activities, and the contribution of active living to increased feelings of personal worth, energy and vitality. Credit will only be granted for one of RECR 180 or RMGT 280. (3:0:0)

RMGT 290 (3) Program Planning II
Building on Program Planning I, this course requires students to complete an extended practical experience with a recreation service provider. Topics covered include review of the recreation programming cycle, identification and mitigation of risks, program resources, volunteer recruitment and supervision, promotion and sponsorship, budget management, implementation and evaluation. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 290 or RMGT 290. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: RMGT 190.
RMGT 309A (9) Third Co-operative Education Work Placement
The third and final practical on-the-job training experience as described in RMGT 109. Admission is based on availability of space and the student's academic performance. (9:0:0 for 26 weeks)

RMGT 311 (3) Consumer Behaviour in Recreation
A consideration of the concepts of consumer behaviour, and the practical implications of these concepts to leisure. Topics include designing products through an understanding of consumer needs, and designing marketing strategies that influence the consumer to purchase these products and to receive satisfaction from the purchase decision. (4:0:0 for 10 weeks)
Prerequisite: Enrolment in third-year of the Recreation Major program.
RMGT 480 (3) Issues, Trends and Professional Practice in Recreation
The ability to apply knowledge of current issues and trends to the development of professional practice. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: Enrolment in fourth-year of the Recreation Major program.
