An introduction to business. Topics include the interrelationships between the functional areas of business (marketing, human resource and operations management, finance, accounting) and the external environment; and developing a framework for business analysis. MGMT 161 (3) Indigenous Leadership
An exploration of leadership identities from both Indigenous and Western perspectives. Students will examine leadership qualities, skills, styles, models, and barriers to leaders that `walk in two worlds'. With an emphasis on culture and community, students will begin to develop their own leadership identity framework. (3:0:0)

MGMT 181 (3) Fundamentals of Indigenous Entrepreneurship
A discovery and investigation of the history and fundamentals of Indigenous Entrepreneurship. Students will examine key concepts, activities, and identify how entrepreneurship can support Indigenous community needs, culture, values, and traditions. (3:0:0)

MGMT 192 (3) Principles of Management (Ends Sep 2024)
An examination of the process of achieving organizational goals through the use of strategic and operational strategies involving the four major management functions: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Credit will only be granted for one of MGMT 371 or MGMT 192. (3:0:0)

MGMT 192 (3) Principles of Management (Effective Sep 2024)

MGMT 230 (3) Introduction to E-Management
An introduction to business and technical issues related to the internet and other business technologies. Topics include internet technology, internet business models, intranets, extranets, web portals, internet opportunities for sales marketing and branding, e-business software, hardware, internet security, e-business planning, web services, hosting and basic web site design. MGMT 230 was formerly called MARK 330; credit will not be granted for both courses. (3:0:0)
Prerequisite: MARK 160 and EITHER competency in computer use (see BBA Program for details) or QUME 185.
MGMT 252 (3) The Wine Industry
An introduction to the wine industry. Topics will include the management of wineries and vineyards, retail sales, types of wines, grape varieties, and the major wine producing regions. Students will visit an operational vineyard and winery. There is also an optional winetasting component. A lab fee will be assessed for this course. (3:0:0)

MGMT 261 (3) Indigenous Values in Business
An introduction to Indigenous values in business through dialogue and comparison with Western European business values. Topics include the meaning of work, wealth, exploitation, debt, and reciprocity. MGMT 261 was formerly called PHIL 236; credit will not be granted for both courses. (3:0:0)

MGMT 292 (3) Organizational Behaviour
A study of how behaviour generated by people in organizations affects the individual, relationships with others, and performance in groups with focus on the way organizations function as a whole and the factors which relate to effectively managing organizations. Credit will only be granted for one of HRMN 292 or MGMT 292. (2:1:0)

MGMT 293 (3) Human Resource Management
An overview of the knowledge and skills needed to recruit, manage and develop employees to benefit both the organization and its people. Topics include role of a manager, recruitment and orientation, interviewing skills, training and development, coaching, performance management, maintaining a harmonious work environment and managing change. MGMT 294 (3) Management Skills I
Using a case approach, students will develop specific management skills such as interpersonal and team, problem solving and decision making, oral and written communication, and conducting meetings. MGMT 294 was formerly called MGMT 171; credit will not be granted for both courses. (2:1:0)

MGMT 323 (3) International Business I
An introduction to the essential elements of international business. Topics include modes of entry, theories of international business, cross-cultural issues, the legal environment, trade theory, the multi-national corporation, exchange rate effects, foreign direct investment, functional management and operational concerns of business in the international arena. MGMT 330 (3) Internet Management
A study of the issues related to creating on-line companies, incorporation, costing business models, and selling goods and services over the internet. Topics include venture capital, payment systems, distribution, pricing, delivery systems, returns, advertising, storefronts, web site design, portals, e-mails, and promotions. MGMT 332 (3) Technology and Organizational Change
A study of the issues related to the use of technology as an enabler for business improvements and organizational change. Topics include business process re-engineering (BPR), industry value chains, business change models, enterprise resource planning systems (ERP), change management, and organizational design. (2:0:1)

MGMT 345 (3) Workplace Safety and Wellness
An introduction to workplace health and safety issues. Topics include loss control principles, claims management, WHMIS, safety program implementation, accident investigation principles, workplace stress, lifestyle, and family issues. (3:0:0)

MGMT 352 (3) Wine Appreciation
An introduction to the art of wine tasting. Topics include the proper methods for tasting and evaluating wine, an in-depth exploration of wine varieties and the major producing regions, wine and food pairings, service techniques and wine tourism. MGMT 355 (3) Training and Development
An exploration of HR development and training skills. Topics include the training and development process from start to finish, needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Purposes, procedures, strengths, and limitations of various traditional and alternative training and development methods will be reviewed. (3:0:0)

MGMT 365 (3) Compensation and Benefits
A review of contemporary practices and issues in the management of compensation and benefit packages. Topics include various benefit plans, job analysis, job evaluation, compensation systems, pay equity, wage and benefit administration, compensation surveys, pension reform, and mandatory retirement. MGMT 373 (1.5) Applied Management Skills
An application of work-specific skills for dealing with such human resource management issues as managing problem employees, dealing with diversity, delegating, training the trainer, using audio-visual aids, presentation skills, managing time, and chairing meetings. Emphasis is on "doing" as opposed to an intellectual understanding of these topics. (2:2:0)

MGMT 374 (1.5) Interviewing Skills
An analysis of the tools and techniques for successful interviewing. Topics include selection interview, appraisal interview, discipline interview, and the "bad news" interview. Training techniques emphasize role playing with video taping for individual feedback. (2:2:0)

MGMT 377 (3) Recruitment and Selection
An examination of the recruitment and selection function in organizations. Topics include the legislative framework, recruitment, selection, deployment, retention, termination, and outplacement of staff. Reviewing current issues, students will analyze the needs and practices of organizations in human resource recruitment and deployment. (3:0:0)

MGMT 381 (3) Entre/Intrapreneurship (Ends Dec 2024)
An introduction to entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, exploring the risks and benefits of start-ups, either as an independent business person or within the context of a company. Topics include developing and evaluating business opportunities and starting a new venture, including the preparation of a business plan. MGMT 381 (3) Entre/Intrapreneurship (Effective Jan 2025)
An investigation of the multifaceted world of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. Topics include: the skills and mindset needed for innovative success, the risks and benefits of a start-up venture, aspects of social responsibility and sustainability development in an entrepreneurial venture, and a feasibility analysis of a potential business idea. An introduction to Federal and Provincial workplace legislation and the responsibilities and rights of all employers, managers and employees. Topics include employment standards laws, labour legislation, reasonable accommodation, human rights legislation, equity in the workplace, harassment, health and safety and WHMIS. An examination of organizations across borders and cultures. Topics include the global manager's environment, the cultural context of intercultural management, intercultural relations, organizational behaviour, and human resource management. (3:0:0)

MGMT 423 (3) International Business Strategy
An investigation of the nature of international business strategies through analysis of the design, formulation and implementation by management of international strategies. Examines the variety of factors that are required for and influence strategic decision-making in specific foreign locations and in the international business environment in general. (3:0:0)

MGMT 425 (3) Strategic Human Resources Planning
An introduction to human resources planning. Topics include environmental influences on Human Resource Management, management systems, forecasting processes, demand/supply of personnel, succession management, strategic and international Human Resource practices. MGMT 430 (3) Evidence-based Management & ERP
This course introduces enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) and shows how organisations use these systems to operate more efficiently and effectively across functional areas with a system using a single database. The course examines typical Enterprise Systems modules: materials management, supply chain management, customer relationship management, financials, and human resource management and is primarily targeted at small to medium sized enterprises (SME). MGMT 432 (3) Internet Entrepreneurship

Covers systems analysis, requirements, process modeling, data modeling, data management, business operations, advanced web site concepts, server software and hardware, website management, multimedia files and database integration. Topics include techniques to link web pages to back-end databases and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and site definition. Dreamweaver 3 and Flash 4 are used to create web pages containing advanced multimedia elements including animations. (1:0:2)

MGMT 450 (3) Operations Management
An introduction to problems and analysis related to the design, planning, control and improvement of manufacturing and service operations. Topics may include supply chain management, process analysis, project analysis, materials management, production planning and scheduling, quality management, reengineering, capacity and facilities management, service management and operations strategy. MGMT 456 (3) Judgment in Managerial Decision Making
An introduction to the biases which lead to less-than-effective decisions. Students apply strategies for counteracting these biases, through exercises, case studies, and shadow decisions for private enterprise and public organizations. Builds on previous management courses involving decision making to increase effectiveness in managerial decisions. (3:0:0)

MGMT 460 (3) Business - Government Relations
A study of the Canadian political environment as it relates to the business community. Includes analysis of federal and provincial government structures, political parties, lobby groups, policy development and other related topics. MGMT 476 (3) Applied Organization Theory and Design
A study of the organization's internal and external relationships. Topics include the activities and processes needed to keep an organization competitive, organizational purpose, structural design, open systems, internal design elements, and managing dynamic processes. (3:0:0)

MGMT 481 (3) Business Plan Development & Funding
This advanced course focuses on practical aspects of securing funding for a new venture and development of a complete and compelling business plan. Topics will include: entrepreneurship and the venture capital landscape, investor psychology, strategy and sustainability, and aspects of digital and global ventures. (3:0:0)

MGMT 482 (12) International Business Internship
An international project on a full-time, paid or unpaid basis (depending on the policy of the hosting institution), with an organization in a foreign country. Minimum 400 hours over approximately 12 weeks. Credit will only be granted for one of MGMT 382, MGMT 499 or MGMT 482. (0:0:0 -400)
Prerequisite: Third-year standing in the BBA program and permission from a Business faculty advisor.
MGMT 483 (3) Project Management for Business and Technology
Topics include project initiation, the RFP process, basic principles, creation of work breakdown structures, preparing network diagrams and Gantt Charts, assessing risk, using budgets, controlling resources, and project termination. Students will apply theoretical concepts to cases using industry software (MS Project) as tool to manage and administer projects. (2:0:1)

MGMT 485 (3) Labour and Employee Relations
An introduction to Canadian traditions, issues, and trends in labour and employee relations. Topics include union and non-union workplaces; the Canadian labour movement; the legal framework; collaborative relationships between unions and management; and maintaining proactive and innovative workplace practices. A project for business degree students which may be taken only after consultation with the department faculty Advisor. MGMT 499 (6) Business Internship (Ends Dec 2024)
A substantial project with an approved organization. A minimum of 200 hours over a six-month period is required. Students must submit a written application to the business department chair by the end of the first week of classes. Credit will only be granted for one of MGMT 382, MGMT 482, MGMT 491 or MGMT 499. (0:0:0 -200 for 30 weeks)
Prerequisite: Completion of 75 credits in a Business program and permission of department faculty Advisor.
MGMT 499 (6) Business Internship (Effective Jan 2025)
A substantial project with an approved organization, this internship experience can be paid or unpaid. Students undertake a minimum of 240 hours of applied work and complete an academic report while gaining experience in the community in a field of interest. Credit will only be granted for one of FNCE 499,ACCT 499,ACCT 491,MGMT 491,MGMT 482,MARK 499,MARK 491 or MGMT 499. (0:0:0 -240 for 30 weeks)
Prerequisite: Completion of 75 credits in the Bachelor of Business Administration program including a minimum of the following upper level credits specific to the student's chosen major: nine upper level VIU credits for Accounting and Finance, and six upper level VIU credits for Management & Law, and Marketing, along with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the student's major-specific upper-level credits completed towards the BBA program.
