FNCE 130 (3) Intro to Finance (Ends Sep 2024)

An introduction to mathematical techniques used to determine the present and future value of cash flows. Topics include the financial management function, operating and financial leverage, working capital, current asset management, and sources of short-term financing. CPA transfer available. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: ACCT 100 and min. "C" in one of Principles of Mathematics 12, Applications of Mathematics 12, Foundations of Mathematics 12, Pre-calculus 12, MATH 151 or MATH 065.

FNCE 221 (3) Financial Planning

Modeled on the Personal Financial Planning course offered by the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning in its Chartered Financial Planner program. Topics include identification of financial goals and priorities, budgeting, credit and debt, risk management, savings and investment, mortgages and buying a home, retirement planning, wills and estate planning, and preparation of a financial plan. Prerequisite: FNCE 130 or FNCE 131.

FNCE 322 (3) Real Estate

An introduction to real estate investment and financing. Topics include types of land holdings, patterns of land use and control, property and contract law, valuation approaches, taxation, instruments and institutions of real estate financing, real estate investment trusts, brokerage and listing. Prerequisite: FNCE 130 and third-year standing in the BBA.

FNCE 330 (3) Corporate Finance

Corporate Finance will present the student with mathematical, statistical, and analysis tools useful in evaluating risk, judging investment proposals, examining fundraising alternatives, and understanding international financial management issues. CPA transfer available. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130 and ACCT 100.

FNCE 342 (3) Canadian Insurance Practices

An introduction to insurance and risk management concepts. Topics include the economics of insurance, policies, products, underwriting, marketing, ethics, and professional standards. Students successfully completing this course with a minimum of 60% on the final exam will receive the Life License Qualification Program Certificate of Completion and be eligible to write the Provincial Certification exam. FNCE 344 (3) Canadian Investment Funds

Modeled on the Canadian Investment Funds course offered by the Investment Funds Institute of Canada. Topics include the nature and organization of an investment fund, types of investment funds, regulation of investment funds, the role of investment funds in forming a personal investment portfolio. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130 or FNCE 131.

FNCE 345 (3) Security Analysis and Investment Management

Topics include: financial statements and their interpretation, the money market, government and corporate bonds, preferred and common shares, the stock exchanges, buying and selling equities, how Canadian tax laws affect investors, building and managing an investment portfolio, securities regulation and investor protection. Prerequisite: FNCE 130 or FNCE 131.

FNCE 346 (3) Fixed Income Analysis

A detailed study of fixed income securities. Topics include short term notes, bonds, bank loans, mortgage and asset backed securities, collateralized debt obligations, return and risk measurement, credit ratings and portfolio rebalancing. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130 and QUME 232.

FNCE 360 (3) Professional Retirement Planning

A study of professional financial planning. Topics include pre- and post-retirement savings and income programs, the retirement decision and taxation issues. Offered in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP) in preparation for the CFP qualifying exams. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130 or ACCT 217.

FNCE 361 (3) Risk Management and Estate Planning

An in-depth examination of estate and retirement planning tools. Topics include insurance needs (health, life, long-term care), financial planning, wills, personal trusts, death and taxes. Offered in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP) in preparation for the CFP qualifying exams. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130.

FNCE 423 (3) International Finance (Ends Sep 2024)

An introduction to the theory and models associated with international financial management. Topics include models of spot exchange rate, forward rates and exchange rate determination, balance of payments, effects of monetary and exchange rate policy, short-term borrowing, international investment and capital flows, managing international financial risks, import and export. Prerequisite: One of ECON 305 , ECON 306, ECON 360, or MGMT 323.

FNCE 423 (3) International Finance (Effective Sep 2024)

FNCE 427 (3) Risk Management and Portfolio Analysis

Examines the principles and techniques of portfolio theory and construction, including the efficient portfolio, capital asset pricing and arbitrage pricing models, bond analysis and the risk structure of interest rates, the role of options and other derivatives in reducing risk, and portfolio performance evaluation. FNCE 428 (3) Options and Corporate Securities

Examines the role and functioning of the derivatives market products, particularly options, futures, forwards and swaps; and develop an understanding of how these assets are traded, and strategically employed to reduce risk in portfolios and general corporate financial management. (3:0:0)

FNCE 429 (3) Emerging Issues in Finance

This course will explore emerging issues and special topics in finance, and may be offered in conjunction with related disciples such as accounting, economics, and management. Topics: international investing, advanced issues of compliance and regulation of financial industry; technical analysis of trading financial assets; emerging trends and topics. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Fourth-year standing (completion of 75 credits), Concentration in Financial Services, or Accounting, or with departmental approval.

FNCE 435 (3) Entrepreneurial and Venture Finance

An advanced study of the role of finance in the entrepreneurial and small business setting. Topics include issues of firm valuation, competitive position, composition, stages and terms of financing sources and their associated obligations. (2:1:0)

Prerequisite: Fourth-year standing in the BBA and FNCE 330.

FNCE 460 (3) Strategic Investment Planning and Wealth Management

An examination of professional financial planning. Topics include a comprehensive investment policy for a client's wealth allocation within a set of investable instruments. Offered in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP) in preparation for the CFP qualifying exams. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130.

FNCE 461 (3) Income Tax Planning

An in-depth study of Income Tax Planning. Topics include taxation of proprietorships, partnerships and property incomes, employee stock options, dividends, capital gains and losses and rental income. Offered in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP) in preparation for the CFP qualifying exams. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: FNCE 130 or ACCT 217.

FNCE 499 (6) Finance Internship

A substantial project with an approved organization. A minimum of 240 hours over six months is required. Students must submit a written application to the Finance/Quantitative Methods chair by the end of the first week of classes. Credit will only be granted for one of ACCT 499,ACCT 491,MGMT 499,MGMT 491,MGMT 482,MARK 499,MARK 491 or FNCE 499. (0:0:0 -240 for 30 weeks)

Prerequisite: Have completed a minimum of 75 credits in the Bachelor of Business Administration program, including at least six upper-level credits in the student's concentration of study; and Maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their last full-time academic year
