BIOL 047 Biology 11 - Advanced

Covers cell biology, evolution, diversity of life, and ecology. In addition to obtaining a body of knowledge in each topic, students will learn and apply biology-focused lab and field procedures. (6:0:2 for 13 weeks)

BIOL 067 Anatomy and Physiology 12 - Provincial

Equivalent to Anatomy and Physiology 12, Biology 067 covers human biology, basic genetics and cell biology. This course is useful for other university and vocational programs, especially the health sciences. It may be used towards a Provincial Certificate. (6:0:2 for 13 weeks)

Chemistry

CHEM 047 Chemistry 11 (Ends Aug 2024)

This course covers some basic topics in chemistry such as measurement, atomic structure, bonding, nomenclature, balancing equations, the mole, solutions chemistry and organic chemistry. This course is equivalent to Chemistry 11. (6:0:2 for 13 weeks)

COSC 067 Computer Science: Provincial Level

COSC 067 provides students with practical programming skills. These are developed in the context of program design and learning object oriented programming (OOP). This course is good preparation for Computer Science or any discipline which will require computer programming. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

COST 020 Computer Studies - Fundamental

Introduction to computers, designed primarily for students with little or no computer experience. Emphasizes keyboarding and word processing. (8:0:0 for 14 weeks)

COST 030 Computer Studies - Intermediate Level

This is an introductory course designed to give students basic computer skills that they can use in both the college and work environment. (8:0:0 for 14 weeks)

Prerequisite: ENGL 020 or equivalent assessment.

COST 047 Computer Studies 11 - Advanced

An exploration of computers and applications, designed for students with basic computer skills. Topics may include introduction to computer hardware, Windows, word processing, the internet, spreadsheet and database applications, and email. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

Prerequisite: ENGL 037 or permission of instructor.

COST 067 Computer Studies 12-Provincial

Practical study of computer applications and skills, and how to apply them to effectively solve problems in academic, work and personal lives. Instruction modules include a minimum of two of the following topics: information technology, publishing/presentation, advanced spreadsheets, database management, networking, programming, graphics, online technologies, web publishing. (8:0:0 for 14 weeks)

Education and Career Planning

EDCP 067 Education and Career Planning 12 (Ends Aug 2023)

IECE 032 Indigenous Education and Career Exploration (Effective Sep 2024)

STSK 038 Indigenous Student Success and Academic Readiness - Intermediate Level

This ABE intermediate level Student Success and Academic Readiness course is designed to help Aboriginal students develop access, academic confidence and self-awareness necessary for success in life-long learning. Using First Peoples Principles of Learning, this course will explore Indigenous ways of knowing and learning while providing traditional academic skillsets. The understanding of self and connectedness play a significant role in the outcomes of this course. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

STSK 064 Learning Strategies for Success in Math

This course will be helpful as a companion course for any math course at any level. Students will discover the purpose and meaning of the content of their mathematics course(s). Mathematical confidence, algebra skills, graphing skills, and number sense will also be enhanced using learning strategies based on brain science. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

STSK 068 Indigenous Student Success and Study Strategies - Provincial Level

This provincial-level Student Success and Study Strategies course is designed to help Aboriginal Bridging students develop the learning skills, study strategies and self-awareness necessary for success in life-long learning. Using First Peoples Principles of Learning, this course will explore Indigenous ways of knowing and learning, while providing traditional academic skillsets to students. The understanding of self and connectedness play a significant role in the outcomes of this course. Credit will only be granted for one of STSK 067 or STSK 068. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

TPOF 068 Thuy'shenum: Preparing Oneself for the Future - land based

This Elders-led, land-based course teaches students to discover their learning spirit. This is a one-week intensive course on the land. Students will live as a community to learn from Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, and others to better understand self to provide a new vision to education in post-secondary environment. (0:0:0 -60 for 1 weeks)

Prerequisite: Elder and Coordinator recommendation.

TPOF 069 Thuy'shenum: Preparing Oneself for the Future-classroom based

This Elders-inspired, classroom-based course prepares students to further discover their learning spirit (guide for purpose and vision). This two-week intensive course welcomes students into an academic setting, where they will continue skill building and improving self-confidence to prepare them for education and the work force. (32.5:0:0 for 2 weeks)

Prerequisite: TPOF 068 or with Elder and Coordinator permission.

TRSN 090 Transitions - Provincial Level

This individualized course prepares students for successful transition into VIU's post-secondary programs by supporting the development of academic and personal success skills. Topics may include navigating the university environment, identifying and accessing supports, academic persistence strategies, intercultural awareness and sensitivity, self-advocacy, resilience, self-regulation and care, communication, and professional networking. This course carries credit at the ABE Intermediate level. It focuses on reading, sentence and paragraph writing, spelling, and vocabulary activities. On successful completion of ENGL 037, students will have the skills necessary to enter ENGL 047 (Academic English 11). (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

Prerequisite: ENGL 016 or assessment or permission of instructor.

ENGL 047 English-Advanced

Equivalent to English 11, focusing on essay writing, research and some study of literature. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in ENGL 037 or assessment or permission of instructor. Strongly recommended that students have familiarity with basic word processing skills.

ENGL 067 English-Provincial

Equivalent to English 12, focusing on the study of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, essay writing and research. A prerequisite for many technical and university courses. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

Prerequisite: Min. C+ in ENGL 047 or assessment or permission of instructor. Strongly recommended that students have familiarity with basic word processing skills.

ENGL 068 First Peoples Literature and Composition

This provincial-level English course focuses on the study of orature, fiction, poetry and drama by Indigenous authors. Students will write essays, deliver oral presentations and develop research skills. Readings and assignments in this course will explore Indigenous history and culture and incorporate First Peoples principles of learning. It is strongly recommended that students have basic word processing skills. Credit will only be granted for one of ENGL 067 or ENGL 068. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

Entrepreneurship

ENTP 067 Entrepreneurship 067 - Provincial

This course focuses on business ideation, prototyping, and model validation, enhancing students' skills in opportunity assessment, competitive advantage creation, target market definition, and resource management. It fosters entrepreneurial thinking, risk identification, and business plan development, culminating in a persuasive business pitch presentation. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

First Nation Studies

FNST 047 First Nation Studies 11

This Advanced Level course will introduce students to First Nations peoples and their ways of knowing, their relationship with the land, and their history. Through team building activities, cultural experiences, and personal growth activities, students will develop a stronger understanding of themselves, their culture, and their place in the world. Fundamental Literacy Mathematics will give students a strong foundation of basic skills, concepts, mathematical vocabulary, and problem-solving strategies to prepare them to meet personal, career or further academic goals. MATH 012 Fundamental Math Level 2

Fundamental Literacy Mathematics will give students a strong foundation of basic skills, concepts, mathematical vocabulary, and problem-solving strategies to prepare them to meet personal, career or further academic goals. MATH 012 provides students with the skills necessary to enter MATH 013. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 013 Fundamental Math Level 3

MATH 037 Introductory Algebra (Ends Aug 2024)

MATH 037 Precalculus 10 - Intermediate Algebra (Effective Sep 2024)

This course includes measurement, geometry, ratios, percent, rational numbers, algebra, linear equations/graphing, powers, roots, scientific notation, polynomials and trigonometry. MATH 041 Introductory Algebra-Advanced

Basic algebra skills suitable for students with little or no previous knowledge of the subject. Provides good preparation for MATH 047. (8:0:0 for 14 weeks)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in MATH 030 or assessment. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 044 Business/Technical Advanced Mathematics

This course provides students with practical applications useful in future vocational training courses or personal life. The mathematical skills are learned within the context of workplace and personal applications. This course satisfies the Math 11 requirement for the Adult Graduation Diploma but is not a prerequisite for Math 12. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 045 Pre-calculus 11: Part I (Ends Sep 2024)

This advanced level course includes algebra, solving equations, graphing and roots. MATH 045 and 046 combined gives credit equivalent to Pre-calculus 11. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 048 Mathematics for Trades

This advanced level trade math course includes using various systems of measurement and converting within and between them; calculating perimeter, area, and volume, using ratio and proportions; using and converting percents, fractions, and decimals; problem solving; and business costs. Not accepted as a prerequisite for Math 047 and Math 067. (8:0:0 for 14 weeks)

Prerequisite: Math 030 or assessment. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 049 Foundations of Math 11

Equivalent to high school Foundations of Math 11 and a prerequisite for many Career/Technical and University programs. Topics include rates, systems of linear inequalities, quadratic functions, geometry, statistics, trigonometry, measurements, and logical reasoning. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 062 Foundations of Math 12

An introduction to mathematics relevant in social sciences, arts and humanities, education, social work, and business. Students will communicate mathematically while exploring non-calculus topics: probabilistic thinking, data modelling, financial decision-making, concepts and functions in the natural world, and logic, reasoning, and argumentation. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 065 Precalculus 12: Part I

The first half of the provincial level pre-calculus course. Includes topics such as graphing, relations, linear and quadratic functions, and systems of equations. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 066 Precalculus 12: Part II

The second half of the provincial level pre-calculus course. Includes topics such as polynomials, trigonometry and trigonometrics, and logarithmic functions. Credit will only be granted for one of MATH 067 or MATH 066. (8:0:0 for 13 weeks)

MATH 067 Precalculus 12

PHYS 047 Advanced Physics

An introductory physics course. Topics include language and concepts of physics to describe physical processes and phenomena, measurement, kinematics, dynamics, electricity, heat, waves and optics, lab skills and safety, and preparation of lab reports. (6:0:2 for 13 weeks)

PHYS 067 Principles of Physics 12 - Provincial (Ends Sep 2023)

Provincial Level physics, equivalent to Principles of Physics 12, for students intending to take science courses in university or technical programs. Topics include: kinematics in two dimensions; dynamics in two dimensions; electrostatics; electromagnetism; and waves. (6.5:0:1.5 for 13 weeks)
