VIU Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity

Research Ethics Board (REB)

Vancouver Island University is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in research involving human participants. The VIU Research Ethics Board (REB) supports this goal by educating the VIU community and by ensuring that research and scholarly activity associated with VIU and involving human participants complies with the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2, 2022).

This website contains information on the VIU REB review process, application forms, guidelines, and resources intended to support researchers.

The VIU REB Chair and/or Research Ethics Officer are also happy to provide project-specific support and information sessions for groups of faculty and/or students. If you have questions, and/or if you would like the REB to provide an information session for your class or program, please do not hesitate to contact the REB at reb@viu.ca.

Harmonized Review

The VIU REB is a partner in Research Ethics BC, a consortium of REBs that facilitate harmonized ethical review among partner institutions. Harmonized review streamlines the ethics review and approval process, allowing for submission of a single ethics application across all partner institutions in BC.

If your project requires approval of multiple REBs in BC, and these REBs are members of Research Ethics BC, please see visit Research Ethics BC for information on how to apply for harmonized review.
